In 2004 he joined the Scotland national team coaching staff under his former manager at Rangers, Walter Smith.
In 2006, he turned down the managerial position at Inverness Caledonian Thistle as he wanted a job nearer his Glasgow home.
On January 10, 2007, McCoist became an assistant manager with Kenny McDowall under Walter Smith at Rangers after Paul Le Guen left the club by mutual consent.
After Rangers’ victory over Queen of the South in the 2008 Scottish Cup Final, Walter Smith revealed that McCoist had been in charge of the team for the entire cup campaign.
On 22 February 2011 it was announced he will be the new Rangers manager beginning in June 2011.
